How to Earn a Point Reduction on Your Kentucky Driving Record
1. Contact the DDL and request permission to reduce points with traffic school.
Point reduction in Kentucky requires a referral by the Division of Driver Licensing (DDL), so even if you haven’t recently received a traffic ticket, you’ll need to contact the DDL to request permission. Eligibility requirements are as follows:
- You may take a traffic school course only once every 12 months
- You must hold a valid Kentucky driver’s license
- You may hold a commercial driver’s license, but only take the course for point reduction
The DDL will inform you of how many points you may reduce from your license. You must wait to receive a letter from the Kentucky DDL before you enroll in your point reduction course.
2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Kentucky online traffic school course.
The state of Kentucky requires you to complete your course within 30 days and submit your proof of completion within that time frame as well. We will report your course completion to the state after you finish your final exam, but it’s also a good idea to have a copy of your completion certificate for your own records.
3. Check your driving record.
Wait 2-3 weeks for the court to process your course completion, and then check your driving record. You should see a reduction of the determined amount of points.
How to Dismiss Points From a Traffic Ticket
1. Contact your court and request approval to dismiss a violation through traffic school.
Please note that a ticket dismissal will not prevent the violation from appearing on your 5-year driving record; it will only be dismissed from your 3-year public record. However, the points associated with the ticket will be dismissed altogether.
For ticket dismissal, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- You hold a valid Kentucky driver’s license
- You have been referred by the court for ticket & point dismissal
- You have not taken a traffic school course within the last 12 months
If you hold a commercial driver’s license, you may take traffic school to prevent points from being assessed to your CDL; however, the violation will still appear on both of your driving records (3- and 5-year).
You may not enroll in your traffic school course until you have received an approval letter from the Kentucky Division of Driver Licensing.
2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Kentucky traffic school course.
You have 30 days to complete your course and submit your certificate to your court, per the requirements of the state.
3. Submit your certificate of completion to your court.
I Drive Safely will mail your proof of completion to your home via whichever shipping method you choose. Standard USPS mail takes 5-8 business days to arrive, so be sure you choose a delivery option which gives you enough time to submit your completion certificate to your court within the 30 days allotted.
4. Check your driving record.
The state will process your course completion and post the ticket dismissal to your 3-year driving record. You will still see your violation on your 5-year history; however, no points will be assessed to either of your records.
