  • How It Works

  • Steps to Getting Your Illinois Drivers License

    Getting your Illinois Drivers License

An Illinois drivers license is a valuable tool  – fortunately, it’s easier to earn one as an adult than as a teenager.

Step 1: Register and complete an adult drivers education course.

An adult drivers education course is mandatory for adults 18-20 years old who have never held a drivers license or completed the classroom portion of a teen drivers ed course. Our Illinois Adult Drivers Ed course spans 10 quick, interactive chapters totaling only 6 hours. Since the course is 100% online and multimedia-based, you can set your own schedule based on your own learning preferences. You have the freedom to study whenever and wherever you want.

You’ll take the final exam after completing our Illinois Adult Drivers Ed course. The exam consists of 20 multiple-choice questions based on the 6 hours of Illinois road rules you’ve just gone through. Don’t worry about passing – you only need 75% correct to pass, and you have 1 retake if needed.

Step 2: Receive your Certificate of Completion

Once you pass the final exam, your Certificate of Completion will be sent to you via e-mail by the State of Illinois. Download and print your certificate to present at your local Driver Services Facility.

Step 3: Go to the SOS Office for Your New License

Congratulations on passing Adult Drivers Ed; you can head to your local Driver Services Facility with all of your necessary materials and apply for a license. Be sure to make an appointment ahead of time, so they are well-prepared to give you a driving test. Don’t forget these documents:

    • Three acceptable forms of identification.
    • Any valid out-of-state licenses, state ID cards, learners permits, or commercial drivers licenses. These must be surrendered before getting your new Illinois state license.
    • Certificate of Completion for your Illinois Adult Drivers Ed course.

Be prepared to pass a vision test, written exam, and a driving test before you earn your Illinois drivers license. Adults 18 and over may not have any time requirements for behind-the-wheel training, but it’s nonetheless a good idea to brush up on your driving skills before a big test. Once you pass, you’re an officially licensed Illinois driver – congratulations!

    1. Am I required to take drivers ed, or can I just get my license when I turn 18?

It is mandatory for Illinois adults aged 18-20 to take an adult drivers education program. You cannot get your drivers license under the age of 21 without having first completed a state-approved drivers education program.

If you’ve completed a teenage driver education course, however, there is no need to take adult drivers ed. All you need is your 30-hour course completion certificate and your other required documents to complete your licensing process.

    1. Do I have to take this course if I'm 21 or older?

Drivers ed is not required for first-time adult drivers age 21 or above. However, it does give you a thorough preparation for the driving environment that you simply cannot get by simple observation or reading through a drivers handbook.

    1. Is your course approved?

Yes! Our online adult driver education course is 100% approved by the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS) office and meets all requirements for an Illinois drivers license.

    1. What's the difference between an adult drivers ed course and a defensive driving course?

An adult drivers ed course includes state-mandated curriculum that qualifies you to earn your Illinois drivers license. A defensive driving course is intended for drivers who already have their licenses and have been required to complete a course for ticket dismissal or point reduction, or to receive a discount on their insurance. A defensive driving course is NOT a substitute for adult drivers ed.

    1. How long is the course?

This Illinois adult drivers ed course is 6 hours long, as required by the state. You may work through those 6 hours at your own pace and around your schedule. So if you wish, you can complete the course in a single sitting, or you may spread it out over a few separate study sessions.

    1. What will I learn in an adult drivers ed course?

This course teaches you the essential skills associated with safe driving and being a responsible member of the Illinois driving community. You will be instructed in basic road maneuvers and behaviors, Illinois road regulations and driving laws, traffic signs and signals, as well as defensive driving techniques and hazard prevention skills to keep you and your fellow motorists safe. You do not have to complete any behind-the-wheel training as an adult driver; you must simply complete and pass this course, and take your in-car driving test at a Driver Services Facility to earn your license.

    1. What's the difference between an online adult drivers ed course and a classroom course?

The curriculum for each of these course formats is exactly the same – however, taking your course online is much more convenient. You have the option of studying from any computer, instead of sitting in a designated classroom, and you may choose to work whenever it best fits your schedule.

You do not have to complete any behind-the-wheel training as an adult driver; you must simply complete and pass this course, and take your in-car driving test to earn your license.

    1. Is there a final exam?

Yes. The final exam consists of 20 questions covering course material. You must pass the exam with a score of 75% or higher, and you are allowed 2 attempts to pass.

    1. How do I get my drivers license?

After you pass your course, make an appointment for your road test at a Driver Services Facility near you. Then you simply take your certificate of completion from your adult drivers education course to a Driver Services Facility, take both vision and hearing exams, and take your road test. You’ll have your license in no time!

    1. How do I get my Illinois drivers license if I'm 21 or over?

If you’re 21 years old or over, you don’t need a certificate from an adult drivers ed course. Just make an appointment for a drivers license test at a SOS office. There, you will take your written licensing exam, and vision and hearing tests, before getting behind the wheel for your road test.

    1. What do I have to do to get my Illinois drivers license if I’m 18-20 years old?

If you are applying for your first Illinois drivers license, you must follow these steps:

    • Visit your local Driver Services Facility.
    • Provide appropriate documents to verify the following: identity, Illinois residency, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and Social Security number. For details on which documents are acceptable, visit the Illinois SOS website.
    • Complete the Application for Illinois Driver License or Identification Card.
    • Surrender all valid out-of-state licenses, state ID cards, permits, or commercial drivers license.
    • Pay the required fees.
    • Pass a vision exam, written test, and a driving test.
    1. Is there a time limit to complete this course?

Once you make your payment, you must complete your course within 30 days. This course meets the 6-hour minimum required by the state.

    1. What's the certificate of completion process? How long will it take to get my certificate?

When you complete your course, I Drive Safely will send your course completion info to the Secretary of State Commercial Driver Training department. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an email from I Drive Safely with the SOS Certificate of Completion attached to it as a PDF download.

Please allow one business day for processing and sending of your Certificate upon course completion.
