    Requirements for Texas Drivers Education

Getting your Texas drivers license is a 4-step process:

STEP 1: 32 hours of driver education. This is the online instruction portion which can be done with I Drive Safely’s online Texas drivers education course.

STEP 2: 14 hours of driver training. This is the behind-the-wheel portion, in which you will receive instruction and practice driving with a driving instructor from a licensed driving school in your area.

STEP 3: 30 hours of logged drive time. 10 of these hours need to be completed at night, with a licensed adult (most likely your parent or guardian). This is also known as “in-car” practice.

STEP 4: Before you take your Provisional License Behind the Wheel Roadway Exam, you must REGISTER FOR and COMPLETE the free Texas TDLR Impact Texas Teen Drivers course (ITTD), located here. Once the ITTD course is complete, you will receive an email with a certificate. Be sure to print out and bring the certificate to the DPS within 90 days. If you do not complete this step, the certificate will expire and you will have to retake the ITTD course!

I Drive Safely’s online course is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and satisfies the requirements of Step #1.

When you begin the course, online instructors will guide you through your lessons and be available to answer any questions you have. They will also grade your online assignments, which will be assigned throughout the course. For your convenience, all of your assignments will be completed online.

  • How to Get Your Texas Drivers License

Few things in life are more exciting for teenagers than earning their Texas drivers license and finally being able to drive independently. It’s a milestone, and it brings with it a lot of freedom. However, before you can jump in the drivers seat by yourself, you’ll need to follow a few steps.

The state of Texas actually offers two methods of getting your Texas drivers license: you can use the Block method or the Concurrent method. With the Block method, you complete the entire 32-hour course before starting your behind-the-wheel training; with the Concurrent method, you can get your learner’s license and start behind-the-wheel training after completing the first two chapters of our course. Don’t worry, we’ve outlined the steps for both so that you know exactly what you need to do, no matter which option you decide to go with.

After You Get Your Texas Drivers License

    1. Can I drive my friends after I get my provisional drivers license?
    2. What is the difference between a permanent and a provisional license?
    3. Is it possible to lose your license?
    4. Is there a "zero tolerance" rule for teens?

After You Get Your Texas Drivers License

    1. Can I drive my friends after I get my provisional drivers license?

If you are under the age of 18 and hold a provisional license, you may only drive 1 passenger under the age of 21 who is not a family member.

    1. What is the difference between a permanent and a provisional license?

A provisional license is a “standard” license for those who are under 18. You must have held a learners license or a minor restricted drivers license for 6 months and be 16 years of age in order to get a provisional license.

Under the Graduated Driver License program, provisional license holders have the following restrictions:

    • They cannot drive a motor vehicle with more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member.
    • They cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless operation of the vehicle is necessary for the driver to work, attend or participate in a school-related activity, or due to a medical emergency.
    • They are prohibited from using a wireless communication device while driving, including hands-free devices, until they turn 18, except in case of emergency.

If they are accompanied by a licensed driver 21 and over in the front seat, none of those restrictions apply. These restrictions remain in effect for 12 months following the license issuance date or when the driver turns 18, whichever comes first. A provisional drivers license expires on their 18th birthday, and must be renewed in order to remove the “provisional” designation and obtain a permanent license.

    1. Is it possible to lose your license?

Yes. If you have been cited for a DUI infraction, and/or have a major accident/traffic violation, your license may be revoked.

    1. Is there a "zero tolerance" rule for teens?

In the state of Texas, if you are under the age of 21:

    • It is illegal to purchase beer, wine, or hard liquor.
    • It is against the law to carry an alcoholic beverage in your car unless your parent accompanies you.
    • If you are convicted of DUI, the court can seize your vehicle for up to six months. You will have to pay a storage fee to retain it.
    • If convicted of a first DUI, you may have to spend time in jail and pay a fine. The DMV must revoke your drivers license for one year or until you are 18, whichever period is longer. You must show proof of insurance, proof of completion for the educational component of a licensed DUI program, and pay a DMV reissue fee.
