What is the Kentucky GDL?
The Kentucky Graduated Drivers License, or GDL, was created as a means of reducing traffic accidents involving inexperienced teen drivers. In the state of Kentucky, teen drivers make up 6% of the driving population, but are involved in 18% of Kentucky's fatal motor vehicle crashes. The Graduated Driver License Law adds a step to getting a license to protect young, inexperienced drivers. There is a six-month intermediate period between the learners permit and the full, unrestricted license. During this intermediate phase, teens have full driving privileges - with two restrictions:
- No driving between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m. (unless it's for an emergency, or for school or work).
- No driving with more than one unrelated passenger under the age of 20.
How Does the Kentucky 4-Hour Driving Class Work?
Our online Kentucky GDL course is a state-mandated four hour course that will teach you all of the information you’ll need to pass your written GDL test. It consists of 7 chapters, with a 10 question quiz at the end of each - you’ll need to pass each quiz before moving on to the next chapter. Once you’ve gotten through all of the material, you’ll take a 30-question final exam - you’ll need to score 80% to pass. If this sounds intimidating, don’t be alarmed! Since the course is done online, you can learn the material at your own pace. And you get three chances to pass the final - if you fail the first time, you can retake it twice more.
If you’re yearning for more practice, you can invest in I Drive Safely’s 50-question or 100-question practice test. Each of our practice tests offer the opportunity to study test questions lifted straight from the written exam. Take them one question at a time, or take randomly generated quizzes to gauge your progress as you get ready for the big test.
Once you pass, the results are automatically sent to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Driver Licensing. In addition to completing the online GDL course, you’ll need to get some driving experience. Drivers must complete a total of 60 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, with 10 of those hours taking place at night.
