What You Can Expect
As a parent instructor, you will be the primary supervisor over your child's learning and driving skills practice. We want to give you full visibility into exactly what your child will be asked to learn, so you can prepare yourself to help them in any way they may need.
The course uses text lessons in combination with videos, graphics, audio clips, and interactive teaching tools – all aimed at engaging their interest so that they actually remember what they learn. They'll work through each chapter at their own pace, concentrating on one topic at a time as they go.
After passing their final exam, your teen will earn a certificate of completion proving that they have successfully taken a drug and alcohol course authorized by the state of Florida. We will also report their success directly to official Florida driver services. If they have taken their Florida permit exam online as well, those results will be reported to Florida driver services, too.
The 50-Hour Practice Log — Your Biggest Role
The online course gets your teen their permit. What happens after that is up to you.
Florida's 50-hour supervised driving requirement is one of the most important parts of the licensing process — and one of the most frequently underestimated. Research consistently shows that practice hours directly reduce crash risk in new drivers.
What to focus on during practice:
- Start in low-traffic environments before moving to busy roads
- Practice all weather and lighting conditions — Florida rain and night driving both require experience
- Log highway driving separately from neighborhood driving
- Practice parking, lane changes, and merging early and often
Keep a signed log. Florida requires a parent or guardian to certify the 50 hours. You'll need this documentation when your teen applies for their restricted license.

Even after your child has finished their Florida TLSAE Drug and Alcohol course and has earned their license, your journey isn't over. Next, you need to establish ground rules, and agree upon consequences for breaking these rules, while your teen enjoys their new freedom on the road.
