Florida Teen Drivers Ed Online (DETS Course)

Florida Law Change: Effective July 1, 2025

Florida's new driver education law took effect July 1, 2025, with a one-month transition period. As of August 1, 2025, teens under 18 who have never held a driver license from another state, country, or jurisdiction must complete the 6-hour DETS course before applying for a license in Florida. TLSAE no longer satisfies this requirement for drivers under 18.

About the DETS Final Exam

This required drivers ed course ends with a required state final exam:

• 50 multiple-choice questions from a 500-question pool
• Score 80% or higher to pass

What About the Florida Knowledge Exam?

The Florida Knowledge Exam and your DETS course are two separate requirements:

• The Florida Knowledge Exam is the state's written test, 50 questions

After you finish DETS, you still need to pass the Florida Knowledge Exam to get your learner's permit. Teens under 18 can take it online through us, or in person at a Florida driver license office.

Who is required to take the Florida DETS course?

As of August 1, 2025, anyone under 18 years old (ages 15-17) who has never held a driver license from any other state, country, or jurisdiction must complete the 6-hour DETS course before applying for a Florida driver’s license. If you’re under 18 and already hold a valid out-of-state license, or if you obtained your Florida learner’s permit before August 1, 2025, you are not required to take DETS.

What’s the difference between DETS and TLSAE courses?

The DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety) course is a 6-hour course specifically designed for teens age 15-17 applying for their first license. The TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) course is a 4-hour course for adults 18 and older. Starting August 1, 2025, teens can no longer use the TLSAE course to meet their licensing requirements—they must take DETS instead.

What happens if I took the TLSAE course before August 1, 2025?

If you’re under 18 and completed the TLSAE course before August 1, 2025, you’re grandfathered in and can use your TLSAE completion certificate for one year after the completion date. However, if you don’t obtain your Florida driver’s license within that year, you’ll need to take the new DETS course.

Do I still need to take the Florida Knowledge Exam after completing DETS?

Yes, teens will still need to complete the Florida Knowledge Exam (FL KE) in addition to the DETS course. While the DETS requirement is new as of August 1, 2025, the Florida Knowledge Exam requirement hasn’t changed. The state is still clarifying final requirements, so check back for updates.
