How to Take an Online Driver Improvement Course  in MichiganÂ
The Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) prevents points from hitting your driving record and violations from being reported to your insurance company. You may only take this course ONCE in your lifetime, so it’s important that you follow all of the necessary steps to ensure that you meet all of your requirements.
To make this as painless as possible, we’ve put together the entire BDIC process into one simple guide for you to reference. And remember, you can always take this course voluntarily to earn a reduction on your auto insurance rates.

How to Complete the Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course Program
1. Receive a notice of eligibility from the Secretary of State.
The Michigan SOS will mail you an eligibility notice after you’ve received your citation. You will be eligible as long as you meet the following requirements:
- You hold a valid non-commercial Michigan drivers license
- Your citation is for a minor non-criminal violation
- You currently carry 2 points or less on your driving record
- You’re not currently in a 60-day eligibility window for a separate traffic violation
- Your ticket is for less than 3 points and is on the list of eligible citationsÂ
- You have NOT gone through the BDIC program before (you can only complete this program once to dismiss points)
2. Enroll in and complete your Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course.
Michigan law mandates that you finish your course within 60 days of receiving your notice of eligibility. If you do not complete your course within this time, the ticket information will be made available to your insurance company, and you will be assessed all points associated with your violation.
3. Receive your certificate of completion in the mail.
I Drive Safely will automatically report your course completion to the Secretary of State, but you should also obtain a copy for your records – just to stay on the safe side.
4. Check your driving record.
Be certain that you’ve received credit for taking your BDIC course, and that all points have been removed from your Michigan driving record. The violation will still be visible, but it will not be reported to your insurance company.
