Home > DMV > Wisconsin DMV Guide > The Wisconsin DMV Driving Knowledge Test

All Wisconsin teenagers under the age of 18 must take a Wisconsin sign and knowledge test in order to start their driving journey. Passing the test is required in order to apply for an instruction permit, the first step toward a full Wisconsin drivers license.

What is the Wisconsin Knowledge Test?

The Wisconsin knowledge test is precisely what it sounds like – it covers basic driving knowledge specific to the state of Wisconsin. Taken from info straight out of the Motorists’ Handbook, it covers topics such as:

  • Driving laws
  • Driving in specific conditions
  • Safe driving techniques
  • Proper right-of-way protocol

Along with the knowledge test, prospective teen drivers are also required to take the signs test, which tests your knowledge of various traffic signs and symbols.

How Can I Take the Wisconsin Knowledge Test?

The Wisconsin Knowledge Test (and the signs test) can be taken at most DMV customer service centers. Most of these centers administer the test on a computerized touchscreen system that gives instant feedback after you answer each question. Additionally, if you’re taking both tests in the same session, the computer will seamlessly transition from one test to the next with no hassle.

What If I Don’t Pass the First Time?

In the case that you don’t pass the test, no problem – you can take the knowledge test up to five times in one year. If you don’t pass by the fifth time, you are required to get permission from DMV staff prior to taking the test, including proof that you’ve progressed knowledge-wise since the last time you attempted the test.

The Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook

Ensure you don’t have to take the test more than once by poring over the Wisconsin Motorists’ Handbook. This comprehensive document should be your primary study guide while preparing for your knowledge test – all of the questions contained in the test are taken from the info in the Motorists’ Handbook. Full of the most updated traffic laws and road rules, the Motorists’ Handbook provides all the info you need to succeed on the road as a safe driver. You can get a copy at any DMV customer service center, or you can download a copy online. Don’t forget to grab one yearly, as laws may change and more precautions may need to be taken on the road.
