Getting an Idaho Drivers License

Once you’ve gotten your Idaho Supervised Instruction Permit, it’s time to prepare for the next step: your first Idaho drivers license, also known as the Idaho underage drivers license.

Idaho Underage Drivers License Requirements

You can apply for your underage Idaho drivers license once you meet these requirements:

• You must be at least 15 years old.
• You must have held your Idaho supervised instruction permit for at least 6 months following the date that you complete your drivers ed course.
• You must have completed 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, including 10 hours of nighttime driving practice.
• You must not have committed any traffic violations during this 6 month period.

Getting Your Idaho Underage Drivers License

You’ll need to apply in-person at your nearest Idaho Driver’s License Office. Make sure you bring the following with you:

• Proof of your Idaho residency, such as your school enrollment records.
• Proof of your legal presence in the U.S.
• Proof of your age and identity, such as your:
• Certified original birth certificate.
• U.S. passport.
• A secondary proof of your identity with information that supports your primary document, such as a high school photo ID.
• Your Social Security card.
• Proof of your school enrollment. (Contact your school or the DMV for more information.)
• Proof of completion of drivers ed
• Payment for the $15 drivers license fee, $17.50 testing fee and $6.50 administrative fee.
• You must be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian.

You’ll be required to pass two tests. The first is a written exam, covering Idaho traffic laws, road signs, and other material covered in the Idaho Driver’s Manual. The second is a road test, in which you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to perform basic maneuvers and show that you can safely operate a car.

Idaho Underage Drivers License Restrictions

Once you pass your test, you’ll receive your Idaho underage drivers license. Congrats! Before you take to the streets, you’ll need to be aware of the following restrictions:

If you are under 17: You may only drive with one passenger who is also under 17, unless that person is a family member. This restriction lasts for 6 months, from the date upon which your drivers license was issued.

If you are under 16: The above passenger restriction applies, as do the following:

• You can only drive alone during the day. When driving at night, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. This person must be seated in the front passenger seat.
• You can have no other passengers in the front seat other than a supervising driver.

You’ll keep your underage drivers license until you turn 18; at that time, you’ll be able to replace it with the full unrestricted Idaho drivers license.
