Inflating-tire Having the correct tires on your vehicle and ensuring that they are in perfect working order is an important safe-driving tactic. It also helps optimize your car’s performance and fuel efficiency. Here are some basic tips you can use to make sure your tires are in tiptop shape.

Check for Wear

You should look closely at your tires to check them for signs of wear and tear on a regular basis. A good rule of thumb is to check the tire pressure and tread once a month, and before you embark upon any long journey. Depending on what you see, you might decide you need new tires, or you might just need to have them balanced and aligned.

What to Look For

Here is a list of common signs to look for when inspecting your tires and the best solution.

1. Both edges are worn

This is normally a result of underinflation and could be resolved by adding more air if the damage has not become too serious.

2. Uneven wear.

This is caused by poor alignment and can be fixed by taking the car to an auto shop and getting a proper alignment.

3. Edges of front tires are worn.

If this is the only sign of damage on the tire, then it probably means that you are taking turns too fast. The only way you can fix that problem is by slowing down. If you don’t, you will not only wear out your tires quicker, but you are also more likely to be involved in an accident caused by excessive speed.

Whining or Other Unexplained Noises

If your tires are making a lot of noise, they need to be checked out urgently. The noises could be a result of poor alignment, worn tread, or maybe even an issue with your car’s shocks. Schedule a visit with your mechanic if you hear any weird sounds coming from your wheels.

Effects of Under Inflation

It’s important to use your owner’s manual and keep your tires inflated at their optimal PSI (pounds per square inch). Underinflated tires are just bad news in many respects as they wear out faster, increase fuel consumption, and reduce or impair your car’s handling ability. Even with a new set of tires, if they are not properly inflated, they will quickly wear out. Don’t be tempted to overinflate them, either – this increases the risk of a high-speed blow out and makes your car unsafe to handle.

Identifying Other Problems

Regular inspection and maintenance of your tires is essential to save you money and keep you safe. You should also look for other potential problems or faults while checking inflation levels at the gas station. Look for any objects that might be embedded in the tire and remove them if possible. If you see a nail in your tire, don’t remove it yourself – take it to an expert. You could cause more damage and end up with a flat.

The other safety feature to check regularly is the depth of the tread. Most tires have tread-wear indicators built into them to offer a visual warning that your tires need to be checked or replaced.

Keeping your tires in good shape and well-maintained will save you money and keep you safe. Take the time to inspect them at least once a month and check the pressure with a tire gauge.
