  • Kansas Online Drivers Education Facts

There are so many ways to exercise your freedom. So, picture this: the wind in your hair as the engine hums while you’re rolling along on four wheels. Getting to this point in life takes responsibility on your part. And that’s where finding the right path to your Kansas drivers permit is a smart move.

Taking Steps Toward Your Learners Permit

You’re eligible to go to your local DMV office and apply for your permit when you turn 14 years old. Just be prepared to provide the following:

    • Proof of your identity
    • Parental consent (ages 14-15)
    • Proof that you’re a resident of Kansas

    Other responsibilities include:

    • Passing a written Kansas permit test
    • Passing a vision test

Once you pay the fees associated with your permit, you’re ready to get behind the wheel and drive. Keep in mind passing the written test is no easy feat when you’re reading from a boring text book. That’s why taking an approved drivers ed course in Kansas is in your best interest. Please note: This course does not qualify as a state-approved drivers ed course. Enroll in I Drive Safely’s drivers ed course to complement your required driving and improve your driving skills.

Kansas’ learners permit also comes with a set of restrictions for new drivers:

    • There must be a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the passenger seat at all times.
    • It’s illegal to text or talk on your cell phone while driving, unless you’re reporting unlawful activity or require help in the event of an emergency.

The learning doesn’t stop with taking Kansas drivers ed, nor with getting your permit. You still have to log at least 25 hours of supervised driving time with a licensed driver over the age of 21. After that, and once you turn 15, you’ve got what it takes to tackle your restricted Kansas drivers license.

On the Road to Your Kansas Drivers License

After you’ve met your Kansas drivers ed course requirements, there are several different types of Kansas drivers licenses you have to acquire from the DMV on your path to more freedom: restricted, less restricted, and unrestricted.

To get your Kansas restricted drivers license, you must:

    • Be at least 15 years old and had your drivers permit for one year
    • Have logged 25 out of 50 required supervised driving hours

You can drive without supervision with a Kansas restricted drivers license in your possession. But if you’re under 16, you still must drive with a licensed driver who’s 21 or older in the front seat, and you must take a direct route when it comes to driving from home to school, to work, or for any work that’s farm-related. What’s more, with your restricted drivers license, you have to complete your remaining 25 hours of supervised driving with 10 of those total hours taking place at night.

To get your less restricted drivers license, you must be 16 years old. Keep in mind that a less restricted drivers license basically only allows you to drive between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Once you turn 17 and you’ve had your restricted drivers license for six months, you’re all set to apply for your Kansas unrestricted drivers license. When you go to the DMV, you will need to provide proof of your identity and show that you’ve completed all 50 hours of your supervised driving time. You’ll also need to pass a vision test and a road test as well as pay any necessary fees to get your license.

Enroll in our Kansas drivers ed course to learn about driving safety. Please note: This course does qualify as a state-approved drivers ed program.
