California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Forms

Before heading to the DMV, it’s a good idea to fill out any and all paperwork well in advance. If you’ve already made an appointment, it can save time and expedite the DMV process significantly.

The number of California DMV forms and applications you’re required to fill out can vary depending on your purpose of visit, but here are some of the more common forms you’ll encounter at the DMV.

The Drivers License or ID Card Application

Also known as the DL 44 form, the application for a California drivers license or identification card is required when you apply for, renew, or replace your drivers license or ID card. If you’re applying for a California learners permit, you’ll have to fill out this form and present it at the DMV, along with your certificate of completion (Form OL 237). Upon processing you will be allowed to take the written exam required to earn a permit.

Don’t forget that you’ll need one or more of the following forms of identification:

  • U.S. birth certificate
  • U.S. passport
  • Official U.S. Armed Forces Identification card
  • Naturalization certificate
  • Permanent Resident card

The DMV also requires a legal document verifying your legal name, such as:

  • Adoption documents that contain your full legal name after adoption.
  • A marriage certificate
  • A Social Security card

Unfortunately, the DL 44 can NOT be filled out ahead of time, as verified original signatures are required on the form for it to be accepted by the DMV. You can obtain a DL 44 by mail by calling the DMV’s automated phone service at (800) 777-0133 or visiting your local DMV office to pick one up.

The California Drivers Handbook

Having a reference guide that pertains to all things road-related is a resource everyone needs. Whether you’re cruising the boulevards of Los Angeles or twisting and turning through the Sierra Nevadas, there are driving rules by which you must always abide. The California drivers handbook is a handy resource guide that describes road rules, safe driving practices, and even the steps you must take to get a license in order to operate a vehicle.

Picking up a drivers handbook is a breeze no matter where you live. You can pick one up in person at a local DMV, download it off their website, or view it online. Whether you’re a first-time driver or you’re a veteran commuter with decades of experience, the California Drivers Handbook is a perfect reference guide regardless of experience.
