Appointments with the Virginia DMV

In Virginia, making appointments for most DMV services isn’t a real option. Unfortunately, you will have to stand in line and wait like everyone else. However, if you plan your visits ahead of time, you will be able to resolve issues quickly and prevent spending all day at the DMV. You can make an appointment for specific services, find out the best times to visit the DMV, and research the online services offered on their website. All of these will help reduce or eliminate the time you spend in line and waiting.

Making an Appointment

Virginia drivers can make appointments for the Commercial Driver License (CDL) Test and the Motorcycle Road Skills Test by contacting their local customer service center. Keep in mind that not all branches provide the Motorcycle Road Skills Test, so consult the website prior to making the appointment. For any other type of service, appointments are, unfortunately, not allowed. You must got to the DMV in person or use their online services if possible. There are, however, alternative measures you can take to expedite your DMV visit and make it as inconvenient as possible.

Ideal Times and Days to Go to the Virginia DMV

Statistics show that certain times and dates are much more ideal for heading to the DMV than others. It’s probably not a good idea to go:

  • On Mondays and Fridays, when people are trying to care of their driving-related tasks before or immediately after the weekend
  • Right before or after a holiday
  • During the first or last of a month
  • During lunch hour, when people try to squeeze in their DMV errands in their lunch break

Instead, try taking care of your DMV needs during:

  • The middle of the week, when everyone else has had enough time to rush in and take care of their urgent demands
  • In the middle of the month
  • Before lunch hour, preferably right when the DMV office opens

With a little foresight, you can easily save hours of idle time. No one wants to say they spent an entire day at the DMV, and you won’t have to if you follow these guidelines to beat the crowd.

Virginia DMV Online Services

In certain circumstances, you can avoid the lines altogether by taking advantage of the online services on the Virginia DMV website. Although not all transactions and issues can be resolved online, the most common driving issues and errands can be taken care of on the DMV website. Services such as address changes, license renewals, registration renewals, and invoice payments can all be done via the Internet, without any need for wait-times and trips that end up lasting an entire day. The Virginia DMV website offers a comprehensive list of its online services, so you can find out instantly whether or not you have to get up from your chair to get it done in person.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires course providers to process and submit your completion information directly to them. This will ensure that the DMV has your information on file. You do not need to submit a paper certificate for DMV point reduction. You will need to submit your original completion certificate to your court or insurance carrier for point or insurance reduction or to have your fine reduced.
