Home > DMV > Nevada DMV > Nevada Adult Drivers License

Quick answer: To get a driver’s license in Nevada if you’re 18 or older, start by applying for an instruction permit. This requires proof of identity, residency, and passing vision and knowledge tests. No driver’s education courses are required, but they can be taken voluntarily. Once you have the permit, you can schedule a driving skills test to obtain your full license.

Adult Drivers License in Nevada – How to get a Driver’s License in Nevada

If you are a new driver 18 years or older in the state of Nevada, you must first apply for a Nevada driver’s license permit. If you are granted the driver’s permit, you will then be eligible to schedule a driving skills test and obtain a full license.

Courses to Take

If you are over 18 years old, you do not need to take any driver’s education courses. But you can always take one on your own to become more comfortable behind the wheel.

Exams/Driving Tests to take

To apply for an original Nevada Instruction Permit (which is necessary before being eligible for a license), you must:

  • Provide acceptable proof of your identity.
  • Be a resident of Nevada and provide a Nevada street address.
  • Present any existing U.S. license, instruction permit, or ID card.
  • Apply in person at a DMV office (they do not make appointments).
  • Complete a Driver License Application (DMV 002).
  • Pay the required licensing and testing fees.
  • Pass the vision and knowledge tests. (See Driver License Testing.)
  • Have your picture taken.

To help prepare you for the actual written knowledge test, you can take an interactive driver’s license sample test.

If you pass these, you will be given a driver’s permit for the state of Nevada. If you receive an Instruction Permit, it will be mailed to you within 10 business days. You may drive only with a licensed driver, 21 years or older, with at least one year of driving experience seated next to you at all times.

After passing the initial tests and being granted your permit you may schedule a driving skills test to obtain your full Driver License. You will be issued an interim document after successful completion of the skills test for a fee of $3.25. The license will then be mailed to you within 10 business days.

Fees

Most original licenses are valid for eight years and cost $41.25. Licenses for those 65 and older are valid for four years and cost $17.25. A $25 testing fee will be charged prior to the written test, covering both the written test and the initial skills test. A $10 retest fee will apply to all retakes.

Other Requirements (Vision Test, etc.)

To pass the requirements for your permit and ultimately your drivers license you will need to pass the vision test, knowledge (written) test, For your drivers license, you’ll need to schedule a driving skills test.

Vision Test

The minimum acceptable vision level for full driving privileges is 20/40. If a driver must wear glasses or contact lenses to meet this standard, Restriction B will be placed on the license.

Knowledge/Written Test

The Nevada knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. 80 percent or better is a passing score.

Skills (Driving) Test

Skills tests are administered by appointment. Not all DMV locations offer all tests.
