What Is the Difference Between Teen and Adult Pre-Licensing Courses in New York?
If you're looking to get your driver's license in New York, there's a lot you need to know. The main driver education requirement you'll need is a pre-licensing course. Both teens and adults have to take this course before scheduling their road test, however, teens are required to take their course in-person.
Designed by the NY DMV, the class has five units that cover road regulations and safety. It's a great way for you to learn more about the finer points of driving. Who can take the Pre-Licensing Course Online?
If you are below 18 years of age, seeking a Class DJ or MJ junior driver's license, you do not qualify for the online course.

What Do Teen and Adult Drivers Learn in the New York Pre-Licensing Course?
During the pre-licensing course, students will cover subjects related to safe driving, including:
Fatigue, alcohol, and drugs in a driving situation
Risk-taking, feelings, and attitudes while driving
Driver skills and habits
Driving within the NY highway system
Reacting to dangerous driving situations and other drivers
New laws and safety concerns
Teen Driving Pre-Licensing Requirements in New York
Teens usually have the chance to take the pre-licensing course through their high school or college. They may be able to receive high school or college credit for taking the class, as well. Make sure all NY DMV classes have an approved instructor. If they don't, they may not count toward getting your license. At this time, teen drivers do not qualify for the online pre-licensing course offered to adults over 18 years of age.
While you need your permit to take the pre-licensing course, the material itself doesn't prepare drivers to pass the required road test. That's why teens need at least 50 hours of driving practice before they take their test. 15 hours of practice must be during nighttime hours. Teens must keep a detailed log of the hours they spend driving.
Adult Driving Pre-Licensing Requirements in New York
