How to Take a Texas Insurance Discount Course

Did you know if you’re a great Texas driver, you can get rewarded in the form of a hefty discount on your insurance rates? If your Texas driving record is in pristine condition, you may qualify for a discount at your auto insurance provider by taking an insurance discount course.

Taking an Insurance Discount Course

The first step to taking a Texas insurance discount course is, as with any defensive driving course, permission. Contact your auto insurance provider and ask them if they’ll offer a discount for taking a state-approved course. They’ll typically only allow a discount if your driving record is clean, but it doesn’t hurt to ask – a few providers are more than willing to overlook one or two marks on your record.

Pro-tip: while you’re at it, ask your provider if they have any other discounts for which you may qualify. It might seem like a fruitless endeavor, but you’d be surprised at the amount of discounts insurance providers offer.

Choosing an Insurance Discount Course

Now that you’ve presumably been approved for a course, the next step is to actually choose one. The world of insurance discount courses is vast; one could easily get lost and confused when deciding which one to take. Make sure to do your research first and ensure your selected course is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. While it isn’t necessarily required, a state-approved course ensures that the course lives up to the state’s standards of quality.

Additionally, pay attention to the format of the course. Will have a few options when looking for a course:

  • In-person classroom – take your driver safety course in person at a classroom with other students. Spend a weekend or so as you listen to lectures from teachers.
  • Online course – a convenient alternative to the classroom option. Take your course online, typically with features that let you study whenever, wherever, and however you want.
  • Online streaming video – the most convenient option for those looking to take a course. Simply sit back and watch a video to earn your insurance discount.

Each one has its pros and cons, so do your research and decided which one best fits your needs.

Getting the Insurance Discount

Once you sign up and complete an insurance discount course, you’ll receive an official certificate of completion from the course provider. Take this to your insurance agent, and they should be able to adjust your rates right then and there.

To recap: Get permission, take the course, and show the provider proof of completion. It’s really as easy as that!
