How to Dismiss a Traffic Ticket

1. Contact your court and request permission to attend a defensive driving course.

On an individual basis, a judge may grant you the option to attend a driver improvement course in lieu of a violation conviction. Contact your court by phone or in person before the date listed on your ticket, and inquire as to whether you are eligible for ticket dismissal through a defensive driving program.

2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely New Mexico Court-Referred Defensive Driving course.

Your court may or may not give you a time frame within which you must register for and complete your course. Make sure to verify this information before you begin studying so you don’t miss any deadlines! (Although our course is entirely self-paced without any time frame to follow, your court may not be as lenient as we are.)

3. Submit your certificate of completion to your court.

We will send you a copy of your completion certificate, which you must then take to your court to provide proof of course completion. The court will process your ticket and point dismissal.

4. Check your driving record.

It’s always a good idea to follow up on your citation to be sure that it has been dismissed from your driving record.

4. How long will this course take?

The New Mexico Court-Referred Driver Improvement course meets the state-mandated 6-hour length requirement.

This course is broken up into 12 single-subject chapters. You may work through your course all in one day if you choose, or you may spread it out over a longer period of time. How long it takes is completely up to you!

5. What types of things will I study?

Each of your 12 course chapters focuses on single topics that pertain to New Mexico driving and traffic laws. These topics include:

• Highway safety
• Alcohol- and drug-impaired driving
• State traffic laws
• Driving emergencies
• Vehicle maintenance

6. Do I have to take a final exam?

Yes. The final exam has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 35 correct (70%) to pass. New Mexico requires the final exam to be proctored. If you don’t pass, you can retake the final exam. Each attempt is proctored online.

7. What is the testing and grading policy?

Each of the 12 chapters contains a quiz that reviews important content from that chapter. There are 10 questions per quiz, and you need to obtain an 80% or higher to pass onto the next chapter. The quizzes will provide you with an excellent opportunity to master the course material and prepare for your final exam. You will be provided with feedback on any incorrect answers, and you may retake your quizzes an unlimited amount of times.

You will then take your final exam at the end of your course, with 50 multiple-choice questions and a required passing score of 70% or higher. You may retake the exam if you do not pass on your first try. Take your final exam from home with an online proctor.

8. Is there any way I can fail the course?

You need to pass each chapter quiz (8 of 10 correct) and the proctored final exam (35 of 50). If you don’t pass, you can retake them, and the chapter quizzes are good practice for the final.

9. Why does this course have timers?

This course is required by New Mexico law to span 6 or 8 hours in length, depending upon your reason for taking the course. To comply with this law, we (and all other online defensive driving schools) are required to place timers on each page of the course. We realize that some students may read faster than the timer will permit you to advance, but state regulations prohibit us from changing this function. The timers cannot be disabled for any reason.

10. Is there a time limit to complete this course?

Deadlines are typically determined by the New Mexico courts. While we allow you 180 days to complete your course before your account is suspended, the court may require you to finish your course much sooner than that. Make sure to determine their deadline before beginning the course.

Regardless of court deadlines, you MUST complete the course within 180 days of registration. Any student who has not successfully completed the course within 180 days will be terminated without notice and will not be eligible for a refund.

11. Do I need to take my final exam with a proctor?

Yes. New Mexico requires a proctored final exam. You can take it from home with an online proctor using your computer’s webcam. There’s no appointment to drive to, and the $13.50 final exam proctoring fee is less than most testing centers charge. You’ll need a government-issued photo ID.
