How It Works – Course in Indiana

The Indiana driver safety program works in 3 ways:

  • You can satisfy a court or BMV order to attend a traffic school
  • You can prevent violation points from appearing on your driving record (with permission from the court)
  • You can earn a 4-point safe driver credit on your driving record
  • You may also take this course voluntarily and earn a possible reduction on your insurance rates

Regardless of your reason for taking this course, we’ve highlighted the exact steps you’ll have to take for each circumstance. With this guide, you’ll get from point A to point B quickly and easily, no stress involved!

How to Meet a Court or BMV Requirement

  1. Appear in court upon the date specified on your citation.

At that time, the judge will give you a deadline by which you must complete an Indiana state-approved driver safety program, such as I Drive Safely’s online course.

  2. Enroll in and complete I Drive Safely’s Online Indiana Driver Safety Program.

Upon completion, I Drive Safely will report your passing grade directly to the BMV. You can also request a copy of your completion certificate for your own records.

  3. Check your driving record.

It’s a good idea to wait at least 2-3 weeks before checking your record to give the BMV time to process your course completion. At that time, you should ensure that you’ve received credit for your course.

How to Prevent Points From Appearing On Your Record

  1. Contact the court and request permission to attend a driver safety program.

You may either appear in person on the date listed on your citation, or you can contact your court by phone to request details on their particular process for attending a driver safety course.

  2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Indiana Driver Safety program.

I Drive Safely will report your course completion directly to the BMV. You can also request a copy of your completion certificate for your own records.

  3. Check your driving record.

After 2-3 weeks, pull up your driving record to ensure that you’ve received credit for your course. The violation itself will still appear on your driving record, but you should see a 4-point credit that will cover the points incurred by your citation.

How to Receive a 4-Point Safe Driver Credit

  1. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Driver Safety program.

When you earn a safe driver credit, you’re taking the course voluntarily. Therefore, there’s no need to contact a court or the BMV. Simply sign up and complete your course – we’ll do the reporting directly to the BMV for you.

  2. Check your driving record.

Wait about 10 days, and then pull a copy of your Indiana driving record. You should see a 4-point credit along with your course completion!
