A 10-question multiple-choice quiz is presented at the end of each chapter – score 80% or higher to move on. Upon completing all chapters, you’ll need to pass a 25-question final exam – score 80% or higher to pass and complete the course.

How to Get a Reduction in Points on Your Driving Record

How to Dismiss a Traffic Ticket

How to Get an Insurance Discount

How to Get a Reduction in Points on Your Driving Record

The Alaska DMV will grant a 2-point credit to your driving record for successfully completing a defensive driving course.

    1. Contact the DMV and request permission to take a defensive driving course.

Generally, you must meet these eligibility requirements:

    • You hold a valid, non-commercial Alaska drivers license.
    • You have not taken a defensive driving course for point reduction within the past 12 months.

Ask the DMV for any other specific criteria that you must meet, based on your driving history.

    1. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Alaska Defensive Driving course.

Our course meets the required 8 hours for defensive driving in Alaska, which you may work through at your own pace. I Drive Safely will submit your course completion to the DMV when you finish. It’s a good idea to get a copy of your certificate of completion for your own records.

    1. Check your Alaska driving record.

After 2-3 weeks, check your driving history to see that your point reduction has been applied.

How to Dismiss a Traffic Ticket

While not mandatory, a judge may grant you permission to dismiss your traffic violation based on your particular circumstances and driving history.

    1. Contact your court and request permission to attend a defensive driving course.

Depending on your violation, you may be required to appear in court on the date listed on your ticket. If it is a minor violation and you are not a habitual offender, you may call the court and request permission for ticket dismissal.

Make sure to specify your wish for full ticket dismissal, as opposed to standard point reduction!

    1. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Alaska Defensive Driving course.

Our course is 8 hours long, as required by the state, and since it is 100% online, you can break it up into small study sessions if you so desire.

    1. Submit your completion certificate to your court by the deadline given.

Your judge or court will likely have given you a deadline by which you must submit your course completion for ticket dismissal. Make sure that you complete your course with enough time to receive your certificate of completion and submit it to your court by their deadline.

    1. Check your driving record.

Follow up by ensuring that your violation does not appear on your driving history.

How to Get an Insurance Discount

    1. Contact your insurance agency and ask if they accept a defensive driving course for an insurance discount.

Generally, you will be eligible as long as you do not have any major violations or at-fault accidents on your record. Your provider will let you know the rate of your discount, and the length of time that it will apply.

    1. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Alaska Defensive Driving course.

As you are not taking the course to meet a specific court requirement for ticket dismissal, you will not have any strict deadlines to meet for your course completion. Relax and take your time!

    1. Submit your completion certificate to your insurance company.

Your insurance agent should let you know whether they wish you to mail, fax, or bring in your course completion.

    1. Enjoy your reduced insurance rate!

    Course Information

    1. Is this course approved?

Yes! Our Alaska defensive driving courses are approved by the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to meet all requirements for ticket dismissal and point reduction..

    1. Which defensive driving courses do you offer in Alaska?

We offer 2 courses to meet the needs of every driver:

The Alaska Defensive Driving course – Court-Referred: For drivers who have received a court order to complete a defensive driving course.

The Alaska Defensive Driving course – Point Reduction: For drivers who have been granted permission from the court or DMV to earn a 2-point credit on their driving record.

    1. I'm not sure if I'm eligible to take Alaska defensive driving. How do I find out?

Generally, you will be eligible to obtain a 2-point credit on your driving record if:

    • You hold a valid, non-commercial Alaska driver’s license
    • You have NOT taken a defensive driving course within the past 12 months

Judges may also grant ticket dismissal on a case-by-case basis, and the requirements will be based upon your particular circumstances and driving history.

We also have all of the eligibility requirements and steps to take for the Alaska defensive driving courses listed on our How It Works page.

    1. Can CDL holders take the course?

Yes, our Alaska course is approved for drivers of commercial vehicles.

    1. How long will this course take?

The Alaska defensive driving courses meet the state-required length of 8 hours. You may work through these hours all in one day, or spread them out over a longer period of time. So the amount of time you take to complete your course is entirely up to you!

    1. What types of things will I study?

Each course is broken down into 8 chapters that focus on a single topic pertaining to Alaska driving and traffic laws. These topics include:

    • Highway safety
    • Alcohol- and drug-impaired driving
    • State traffic laws
    • Driving emergencies
    • Vehicle maintenance
    1. Do I have to take a final exam?

Yes, you do. All of the courses feature a 25-question multiple-choice final exam, which requires an 80% score or higher to pass. If you do not pass your exam on the first try, simply retake it again!

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must take your final exam at an approved testing center, per Alaska state law. You will have the opportunity to choose a testing center near you during registration. If you need to retake your final exam, you must wait 24 hours, and must therefore schedule another appointment at your testing center in order to complete your retake.

    1. Why can't I take my final exam at home?

The state of Alaska mandates that you complete your final exam at an approved testing or notary center. We (and all other defensive driving schools) must comply with these state requirements. Your exam is still taken right on our site, so you will log in with your username and password as usual — you will just do it on a different computer at an approved location. These include UPS stores, public libraries, notary public offices, and other similar locations.

    1. What is the testing and grading policy?

Each chapter contains a quiz that reviews important content from that chapter. There are 10 questions per quiz, and you must score an 80% or higher to move onto the next chapter. You will be provided with feedback on any incorrect answers, and you may retake your quizzes an unlimited amount of times.

You will then take your final exam at the end of your course. You will need to score an 80% or higher, and you may retake the exam again if you do not pass on your first try.

    1. Is there any way I can fail the course?

Absolutely not! You have unlimited retakes on your chapter quizzes and final exam, so if you fail to achieve a passing score on your first try, you may simply take it again.

    1. Why does this course have timers?

This course is required by Alaska law to span 8 hours in length. To comply with this law, we (and all other online defensive driving schools) are required to place timers on each page of the course. We realize that some students may read faster than the timer will permit you to advance, but state regulations prohibit us from changing this function. The timers cannot be disabled for any reason.

    1. Is there a time limit to complete this course?

Deadlines are typically determined by the Alaska courts. While we allow you 180 days to complete your course before your account is suspended, the court may require you to finish your course much sooner than that. Make sure to determine your court’s deadline before beginning the course.

Regardless of court deadlines, you MUST complete the course within 180 days of registration. Any student who has not successfully completed the course within 180 days will be terminated without notice and will not be eligible for a refund.
