  • How it Works

  • How to Take a Defensive Driving Course in Louisiana

The state of Louisiana does not utilize a point system, but traffic violations do appear on your Louisiana driving record and can cause your insurance rates to rise. Individual courts throughout the state may approve a driver improvement course as an alternative to this measure – that’s where I Drive Safely comes in!

To make things easy for you, we’ve outlined the ticket dismissal process in detail below. For those voluntarily taking our Louisiana defensive driving online course, we’ve also detailed a helpful guide to reducing your insurance rate as well.

How to Dismiss a Traffic Violation From Your Driving Record

How to Get a Discount on Your Car Insurance

How to Dismiss a Traffic Violation from Your Driving Record

    1. Appear at or contact your court and request permission to dismiss your ticket with a defensive driving course.

Not all courts offer this option, so make sure you contact yours by the date specified on your citation, and confirm their approval of a driver improvement course for ticket dismissal. Participation will hinge upon your past driving history, the severity of your violation, and any defensive driving courses you may have already taken. You must meet the following general eligibility requirements:

      • You must have been cited for a minor, non-criminal moving violation
      • You must hold a valid, non-commercial Louisiana driver’s license

    2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Louisiana Defensive Driving course.

If your court gives you a deadline by which you must submit your course completion, make sure you enroll in and finish your course in enough time for us to send your completion certificate before your due date.

    3. Submit your certificate of completion to the court.

I Drive Safely offers email delivery.

    4. Check your driving record.

After giving the court time to process your Louisiana defensive driving course, check your driving record to ensure that the violation has been removed.

How to Get a Discount on Your Car Insurance

    1. Contact your insurance provider and ask about their policy on defensive driving discounts.

Most providers will reward their policyholders for being safer drivers, and will offer some sort of discount for taking a defensive driving course. Be sure to ask about the discount rate, and the length of time it would remain valid.

    2. Enroll in and complete your I Drive Safely Louisiana Defensive Driving course.

    3. Submit your completion certificate to your insurance company.

We’ll send your proof of course completion right to you, which you may then take to your insurance agent for them to process. They’ll let you know when you can expect your newly-reduced rate to go into effect.

    4. Enjoy your reduced insurance rate!

    Course Information

    1. Is this course approved by the state of Louisiana?

Yes! Our Louisiana online defensive driving course is approved by courts throughout the state for ticket dismissal.

    1. I'm not sure if I'm eligible to take Louisiana defensive driving. How do I find out?

As permission for ticket dismissal is granted on an individual basis by your court, their eligibility requirements will vary. You should contact your court when you receive your citation, ask whether your driving history qualifies you for ticket dismissal, and request permission to dismiss your ticket with a defensive driving course.

Generally, you qualify if you meet the following eligibility requirements:

    • You hold a valid non-commercial Louisiana driver’s license
    • You have been cited for a minor, non-criminal moving violation
    • Your license has not been suspended or revoked

We have all of the eligibility requirements and steps to take for Louisiana defensive driving listed on our How It Works page.

    1. How long will this course take?

Your Louisiana defensive driving course is a quick 4 hours – you could start and finish your course all in the same day! Your course material is broken down into 8 single-subject units, which you can complete at your own pace. Therefore, how long the course takes is up to you!

    1. What types of things will I study?

Each of your 8 course chapters focuses on a single topic that pertains to Louisiana driving and traffic laws. These topics include:

    • Highway safety
    • Alcohol- and drug-impaired driving
    • State traffic laws
    • Driving emergencies
    • Vehicle maintenance
    1. Do I have to take a final exam?

Yes, your final exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You need to score an 80% or higher to pass, and you may retake the exam as many times as you need to.

    1. What is the testing and grading policy?

Each of the 8 chapters contains a quiz that reviews important content from that chapter. There are 10 questions per quiz, and you need to obtain an 80% or higher to pass onto the next chapter. The quizzes will provide you with an excellent opportunity to master the course material and prepare for your final exam. You will be provided with feedback on any incorrect answers, and you may retake your quizzes an unlimited amount of times.

Once you get to your final exam, you will encounter 25 multiple-choice questions, requiring a passing score of 80% or higher. You may retake the exam again if you need another attempt to pass. You are allowed unlimited attempts.

    1. Is there any way I can fail the course?

Absolutely not! You have unlimited retakes on your chapter quizzes and final exam, so if you fail to achieve a passing score on your first try, you may simply retake them again until you do.

    1. Is there a time limit to complete this course?

Deadlines are typically determined by the Louisiana courts. While we allow you 180 days to complete your course before your account is suspended, the court may require you to finish your course much sooner than that. Make sure to determine your court’s deadline before beginning the course.

Regardless of court deadlines, you MUST complete the course within 180 days of registration. Any student who has not successfully completed the course within 180 days will be terminated without notice and will not be eligible for a refund.

How to Renew a Louisiana Driver’s License

A Louisiana driver’s license expires every six years, on the license holder’s birthday. Drivers will receive a renewal notice from the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) approximately 100 days before their current license expires. However, if for some reason you miss this reminder notice, you still need to know how to renew your license.
