Just as their light is about to turn from yellow to red, one last car speeds through, setting off the flash of the traffic light camera. As the driver passes in front of your car, you get a better look at him, and realize it\u2019s not a driver at all \u2013 it\u2019s a monkey!<\/p>\n<p>Sound crazy? It\u2019s not. It happened.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, a Phoenix resident (thought to be Southwest Airlines employee Dave VonTesmar) thought of a rather creative way to protest the traffic light cameras stationed throughout Arizona. These cameras, present in about a quarter of the U.S., identify traffic light violators mainly through capturing license plates, assuming guilt lies with the owner of the car. However, this may not be the case, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/autos.aol.com\/article\/monkey-man-speeding-camera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">drivers who didn\u2019t commit the offense are often ticketed<\/a>. Only later is the owner\u2019s driver\u2019s license compared to the driver in the photo. In many cases, the DPS doesn\u2019t even assess the photos themselves \u2013 they are sent to a private company. The cameras don\u2019t differentiate between the owner of the car, and the actual driver.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-24748 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.idrivesafely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/monkey-11.jpg\" alt=\"monkey-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/>\u201cMonkey Man,\u201d as he has come to be known, challenged and exposed this fault by repeatedly driving through intersections and triggering the cameras while wearing a monkey or giraffe mask. The latest report showed at least<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com\/valleyfever\/2009\/09\/photo_radar_monkey_has_been_ci.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">90 citations in 2009<\/a>, none of which were able to identify the driver due to the mask. Though VonTesmar has admitted to owning the white Subaru in the photos, he has pointed out that his driver\u2019s license photo does not match up to the photo of the monkey, and therefore it cannot be proven that he was behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot one of them there is a picture where you can identify the driver,\u201d Vontesmar said.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com\/valleyfever\/2009\/09\/valley_monkey_has_37_unpaid_ph.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe ball\u2019s in their court.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The controversy has highlighted the fact that without an actual police officer present to assess the situation, there is no legal proof that the owner of the car is at fault or that the driver was even being unsafe.
