Know Your Laws: Thumbprint Verification in TexasIf you're planning to renew your Texas Driver License anytime soon, you may be asked to give your thumbprint - again. The Texas Department of Public Safety has been requiring thumbprints from Texans before they can obtain a driver license since 1967. In 1995, the law became stricter. Authority was given to the Texas DPS to require thumbprints for those wishing to renew their license or obtain a duplicate driver license. Since then, every applicant who visits the driver license office will be asked to submit updated images for a new license, a renewal, or a request for a duplicate license. The purpose of the thumbprint requirement is to ensure the validity of the driver license and to confirm the identity of the person who has the license.
