Know Your Laws: New California Cell Phone Law Effective Today!

Beginning July 1st, 2008, new California laws that could effect the way you drive go into effect. Starting today, California drivers need to follow these restrictions on cell phone usage:

Hands-free phones: A state law now prohibits drivers from using a cell phone or other mobile device while driving unless they are using a hands-free speaking and listening system.

No cell phones for minors: Drivers who are under the age of 18 are not allowed to use a wireless telephone or any other mobile service device while operating a vehicle - even if the device is hands-free.

There has been some confusion as to the specifics of the new 2008 laws, but it is important that you know them. Here are the other traffic laws that are new in 2008:

  • Stricter consequences for false registration.
  • A new smoking restriction that doesn't allow anyone to smoke in a car where there are passengers under the age of 17.
  • A ban on devices that impair the reading of a license plate by electronic devices.
  • Local jurisdictions are now allowed to establish a speed limit of 15 mph within 500 feet of a school.
  • More severe consequences for street racing.
  • Bike lights are necessary when riding in the dark. Reflectors are necessary while riding on highways, sidewalks, or bikeways.
  • It is now illegal to operate an electric personal assistant mobility device - like a Segway - recklessly or at an unsafe speed.

Factoid
You could be wasting time and money if you are not checking the automobile recalls and technical service bulletins. You could also be missing out on important safety information. The 2006 Audi A3 has a recall notice for "Air Bags Side / Window" and the 2006 Honda Accord has a recall notice for "Exterior Lighting." If your car has a recall notice, you could be eligible for free repairs. Weekly recalls are reported on edmunds.com
Maintenance Tip
Do yourself a favor and save some room in your trunk for the following items. They could turn a potential trip-wrecker into nothing more than an unexpected pit stop:
  • Screwdrivers and wrenches
  • Jumper cables
  • A jack and tire iron
  • A can of "Fix-a-Flat"
  • Water for both the radiator and yourself
  • Emergency flares and reflectors
  • Gloves
  • Blanket and towel
